Muriel Schouten (b. 1990) tries to understand the Western perception of the Other. When is someone defined as such, and under what condition does this definition stand or hold ground? These questions lie at the basis of her practise. Even though she is aware of the complex relationship between representation and reality, she is challenging her own preconceptions through a personal engagement with someone, or something, that is defined as ‘the Other’. Her work is about the process of getting a better understanding of something that is strange and unfamiliar to her own culture.
